Right, the first question will be why on earth yet another blog? The answer is both simple and complex at the same time.
The simple answer is that I have a new project - ME! The longer answer is that there is a heck of a lot of issues in my life and have been for years. And the only one who can do much to address these is me.
What inspires me to take this step is not so much the Olympic Games but one quite special athlete. And I have been struggling to think of much more than his example these past couple of days.
Kieran Behan is an Irish gymnast who was only the second gymnast to represent Ireland at the Olympic Games. But along the way, this amazing athlete was not once but twice condemned to a wheel chair and told he would never walk again. One of these condemnations was the product of a brain injury and he had to do a lot more than just walk again. And he kept coming back. Even two torn cruciate ligaments failed to keep him out of the 2010 World Championships. And finally he made it to the Olympics. No medals for his performance on the day, but someone who isn't supposed to even be walking, is a gymnast, doing the leaping, running and tumbling routine on the floor mat. Staggering. Simply staggering. The look on his face at the end of the routine sent a shiver down my spine. I felt a tear pricking my eye at the sight of him dissolving into tears when being interviewed after his event.
What an incredibly inspiring story.
Kieran has inspired me to tackle my own life. All the garbage I've been dealing with simply does not stack up against that young man's achievements. If he can do all that, then surely I can deal with my issues and get myself going once more. I'll never be the man I used to be but I can certainly follow Kieran's example and get myself up out of the desperation cycle which has dominated my life for too many years now. And that is the nub of Project Me!
So why the blog? It is going to be harder to for me to get off to a start only to let it all slip aside, if I have been openly telling people. And my way of blathering on about things is via a blog.
Stay tuned for yet more, not necessarily pleasant, sharing.
